Maurice Utrillo, The Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre by Atelier Liesjes

An iconic cityscape in which Utrillo portrays the famous Montmartre windmill complex with its characteristic austere clarity and nostalgic atmosphere - an image of folk life, history and visual tranquillity.

🎨 What you see
At the centre is the Galette windmill, with French flag on top, surrounded by green fences and trees.

On the left, a rustic building with red roof, on the right, an open space with walking figures - five people in early 20th-century clothes.

The sky is light blue with soft clouds, giving the scene a friendly, almost festive atmosphere.

The brushwork is loose and impressionistic, emphasising colour, movement and atmosphere.

🧩 Theme
Utrillo here depicts Montmartre as a place of memory and popular culture - the famous dance pavilion as a symbol of Parisian joie de vivre.

The windmill acts as a visual beacon, a landmark in the changing urban landscape.

This work is a nostalgic tribute to the Montmartre of artists, dancers and drinkers in which Utrillo himself grew up.

📍 Style and technique
Typical of Utrillo's late illustrative style: softer colours, decorative touch, and a lighter approach than his "white period".

The brushwork is expressive and friendly, with an almost watercolourist approach to cityscapes.

The composition is balanced and horizontal, with the windmill as the visual centrepiece - an image of orientation and cultural identity.

Maurice Utrillo (26 December 1883 - 5 November 1955) was a painter from France, born in Paris, lived in Montmartre and died in Dax. The artist worked mainly with Sober colours: Many greys, whites, ochres and browns - often with melancholic undertones. Furthermore, he worked with simplified forms: No theatrical perspectives or dramatic lighting, but a quiet, almost naive approach. His style was Post-impressionist.
