Maurice Utrillo, Carco, Montmartre, 1947 by Atelier Liesjes

A nostalgic and illustrative cityscape in which Utrillo depicts his beloved Montmartre as a place of memory, poetry and visual simplicity - a tribute to the neighbourhood as well as to the writer Francis Carco.

🎨 What you see
A narrow street in Montmartre, with buildings on either side and the dome of the Sacré-Cœur prominent in the background.

Walking figures in early 20th-century clothes, bringing the street scene to life.

Façades with inscriptions such as "VINS" and "RESTE", referring to cafés and local trade.

The colours are soft and pastel, with expressive lines and an almost watercolour touch.

🧩 Theme
Utrillo here depicts Montmartre as a living memory - a place of artists, writers and popular life.

The reference to Francis Carco, writer and chronicler of Parisian bohemian life, makes this work a visual-literary homage.

In 1947, at the end of his career, this work is a retrospective of his artistic origins and emotional attachment to the neighbourhood.

📍 Style and technique
Typical of Utrillo's late period: illustrative, decorative and with a lighter touch than his "white period".

The brushwork is looser and friendlier, with an emphasis on atmosphere and familiarity.

The composition is vertical and centred, with the Sacré-Cœur as a visual beacon - an image of orientation and identity.

Maurice Utrillo (26 December 1883 - 5 November 1955) was a painter from France, born in Paris, lived in Montmartre and died in Dax. The artist worked mainly with Sober colours: Many greys, whites, ochres and browns - often with melancholic undertones. Furthermore, he worked with simplified forms: No theatrical perspectives or dramatic lighting, but a quiet, almost naive approach. His style was Post-impressionist.
