This photo shows the fascinating cave town of Matera, this time during the day with bright sunshine and a blue sky.
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is located in the Basilicata region in the south of Italy. Matera is famous for the so-called Sassi - a complex of cave settlements carved into the rock face. These have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. After they were cleared in 1952 due to poor living conditions, the Sassi are now home to museums, hotels and restaurants, among other things, and are a magnet for visitors from all over the world. A few years ago, the town was also the location for a film starring His Majesty's famous spy (with a licence to ...).
Basilicata is a region in southern Italy. It lies south-east of Campania, south-west of Apulia and north of Calabria. The region is divided into the provinces of Potenza and Matera. The city of Matera is the capital of the province of the same name.
