About the artwork

Martinair Cargo McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

Registration: PH-MCU.
Aircraft name: Princess Máxima.

The MD-11 is a medium- to long-range widebody aircraft and could carry from 250 to 410 passengers in different classes. The aircraft had an engine under each wing and a third engine on the underside of the vertical stabiliser. Derived from the DC-10, the MD-11 had a longer fuselage, larger wing area, winglets, new engines and was aerodynamically optimised. Because of the winglets, the aircraft is said to save up to 2.5% fuel. Interestingly, the tail surfaces (horizontal stabilisers) are a lot smaller than those of the DC-10.

As of 1995, Martinair had seven MD-11's in service. A number were used in the summer months for passenger flights to distant holiday destinations. Martinair used a two-class configuration here: 24 seats star class and 344 economy class (a total of 368 passengers). After the summer months of 2008, all MD-11's at Martinair were only used for cargo flights.

This photo was taken on 20 February 2016 along Polderbaan at Schiphol Airport.
