About ‘Marie Fargues, Jean-Etienne Liotard - ca. 1756’
To be seen in the Rijksmuseum in room 1.9
Liotard was 54 years old when he married 29-year-old Marie Fargues. This is one of Liotard's biggest pastels which required two pieces of parchment. It was probably made shortly after their marriage. Liotard used a composition of a drawing he had previously made in Constantinople. He repeated this composition several times in different contexts: one of his famous inventions as 'The Turkish painter'.
