King penguins in St Andrews Bay, South Georgia.
The King penguin is the second largest penguin and can be about 100cm long. The Emperor penguin does a little better at 135cm, making it the largest. Initially, explorers thought the King was the biggest and so they rightly gave this penguin a majestic name, but then they found an even bigger species and how do you top that? Well they thus called that one the Emperor, certainly not a bad choice!
South Georgia is home to the very largest King colonies and St Andrews is the largest with an estimated 300,000-400,000 individuals.
They are beautiful, dignified and perky animals that also show a great deal of curiosity. Not by walking straight at you, but they like to come a little closer and then stop and then stare at you for minutes. What is going on in that head I think ;).
