In the middle of the Champagne Ardennes in France lies the pretty town of Epernay, surrounded by vineyards.
I was there in September 2024 during the vendanges, the grape picking. In this region, when to harvest is determined not by the vintner, but by a committee. The area where wine is allowed to call itself champagne is relatively small, so they look at which harvest period yields the most. This year, that was the last two weeks of September.
On Avenue de Champagne, the street in Epernay where all the big champagne houses are located, such as Moët et Chandon, at number 11 you will find this beautiful door of Maison Belle Epoque, from champagne house Perriër-Jouët. Here you can take a guided tour, taste and buy champagne as well as dine.
This champagne house was founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and his wife, Adele Jouët.
The house is famous for its floral and sophisticated champagnes, with "Cuvée Belle Epoque" being one of the most iconic products. The bottles are often decorated with beautiful floral motifs, as on this door, inspired by the Art Nouveau style.
For this champagne, mainly the Chardonnay grape is used.
You can feast your eyes on this stately Avenue and next to this door you can see the equally beautiful entrance gate and behind it Maison Belle Epoque.
But my eye fell on the door with flower. The details are so refined and beautiful, just like their champagne.
