The Magdeburg Lift Bridge is located a few hundred metres south of the cathedral rock, near Magdeburg Cathedral and the monastery of Our Lady. It was built in 1848 as a single-track railway bridge and can now be used as a pedestrian bridge. It is one of the oldest and largest lift bridges in Germany and is a listed building.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil.
