Both works are exactly matched in height, width ratio and texture, so you can hang them side by side.

In the painting, we see a pale woman in a beautiful red coat, sitting on an ochre-colored yellow chair, in an ocean blue room. Her hands are held folded in front of her.

Cézanne is the artist we know from post-impressionism. In fact, we should think of this period as post-impressionism and as a precursor to modernism. We still see a kind of impression of the moment. Therefore, it is not surprising that there were 4 similar paintings, because basically it is not about the subject, but about the snapshot of that subject. Cézanne, for his somewhat angular style, and increasingly flattening of the form, is seen as a precursor to modernist Cubism in the early 20th century.

The painting has beautiful colors. Truly the colors I love. Attenuated, graying shades of red, blue, some tending toward turquoise combined with the color as I imagine the ocean. The yellow pulls toward ochre because of the toning down. A beautiful work in all its simplicity and wonderful hues.

The original painting is at The Art Institute of Chicago. CC0 Public Domain Designation
