Maasvlakte Rotterdam. The Maasvlakte, also called the First Maasvlakte to distinguish it from the later constructed Second Maasvlakte, is a large industrial area built in the Maas estuary. The plain lies directly on the North Sea and is part of the port of Rotterdam. The area belongs to the municipality of Rotterdam. However, the city of Rotterdam is 40 kilometres inland. The Maasvlakte was constructed in the 1960s. The first ships were received in 1973. The Maasvlakte was built by laying a ring dyke within which sand from the North Sea was raised. This photo was taken on 15 October 2020 at the Pistoolhaven.
