The Masai is the name given to a largely nomadic people in East Africa, mainly living in Kenya and Tanzania. The Masai have managed to preserve their ancient traditions despite growing modern civilisation. Due to various causes, such as the decrease of pasture land for their cattle and drought, this traditional way of living is under great pressure. In 2009 the total population of the Masai was estimated at 1,455,000, of whom more than half live in Kenya.
