This painting depicts steep cliffs, dangling plum blossom branches and a flock of mallards swimming in vast misty waters. The artist sketched the facets of the rocks with oblique strokes known as axe-cuts, while shaping the fluffy down with relaxed, short lines. The dangling, zigzagging beam is another feature of Ma's works. He was therefore called "Ma Yuan of the dragged spray." This painting typified Ma's single-angle composition.
Ma Yuan (c. 1160-1225) was a Chinese painter active during the Song period. He was the fourth of five generations of court painters at the imperial court. Ma was one of the Four Masters of the Southern Song.
Ma Yuan was a versatile painter, but is best known for his shan shui landscapes on hanging scrolls.
