Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a city in the eastern part of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. It lies on the Elbe between Dessau-Roßlau in the west, the Fläming in the north, the Dübener Heide in the south and the Elbe-Elster-Land in the east, just under 100 kilometres southwest of Berlin.
Wittenberg achieved outstanding importance as one of the most important German centres of political, cultural and artistic endeavour in the 16th century: The town church of St. Mary, the castle church, the Luther House and the Melanchthon House have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1996.
