On 4 August 1704 an English Dutch coalition fleet captured the rock after a siege. Since then the passage through the Strait of Gibraltar remained under British control and the rock remained a British exclave.
At the beginning of the siege Gibraltar was occupied by approximately 2,000 Dutch, English, Austrian and pro-Habsburg Spanish troops who had to face a siege force of up to 8,000 French, pro-Bourbon Spanish and Irish troops. The defenders were able to repel the numerically superior siege force by exploiting the geography of Gibraltar and the fortifications of the small town, although they often lacked manpower and ammunition. The besiegers were undermined by disputes between the French and Spanish officers and terrible conditions in their trenches and bastions, which led to outbreaks of epidemic disease and undermined morale.
Louis Boudan (16 ??? - 17 ??) was an artist working for François Roger de Gaignières, a French genealogist, antique dealer and collector active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
