About "Loss in the Silence of Le Chambe"

by Kim Stijger

About the artwork

At Le Chambe German cemetery in Normandy, the names of thousands of fallen soldiers lie in the shade of trees gently rustling in the wind. The photograph shows a simplicity that is almost unfathomable, yet powerful in its message. The rows of white crosses, neatly in line with the horizon, convey a silence that is almost tangible. The cemetery is not a place of struggle, but a symbolic resting place for those who gave their lives in a war that destroyed many lives.

The transient nature surrounding the cemetery contrasts with the determination of the crosses, which keep alive the memory of the lost sins of war. While the trees lose their leaves, the names on the stones remain untouched. The rows seem endless, raising questions about the meaning of war, the toll paid and the lasting impact on the generations that follow.

Le Chambe is a place of reflection, a reminder of the horrors of war, but also a silent call to never forget the effects of violence. Here lie the faces of those who fought for a different future, a future we must cherish with care.
