In the Netherlands, next to the tawny owl, the most common owl species. About the size of a crow with striking bright orange eyes and large ear tufts. Is a true nocturnal animal that one will rarely see during the day. Only 'sometimes seen in groups in winter on the outside of preferably conifers, but also in bushes and ivy where they seem to warm themselves in the sun. When in danger, the long-eared owl makes itself small and assumes a tense posture. If the long-eared owl feels at ease, its contour becomes more plump. Lives mainly on mice and shrews, but 's winters it also strikes small birds at dusk. As a nesting site, it usually chooses abandoned nests of birds such as crows and pigeons. However, it also nests on the ground.
