About ‘Lone swan in the Vught Gement’ by jan van de ven

Sun in the water of the wet polder Gement in Vught. Willows and their reflections. Beautiful cloudscapes.H it is Friday afternoon, 6 January 2023 on the Honderdmorgensedijk, in the middle of the Gement polder in Vught. It is the end of the afternoon. The sun is low. And then there is that one mute swan in the middle of the water. Swan Lake? Sounds nice, but no. It's just the flooded polder, because this is a retention area that is allowed to overflow during extreme rainfall and high water levels; currently still a layer of water of nothing. Nor is it a dying swan, there in the middle. On the contrary: the bird is alive and well, paddling calmly in the evening sunlit water like a poor lonesome cowboy - and a long way from home.

i once was a journalist working for dutch regional newspapers. the writing kind, not a photographer then. in the last years of my carreer in newspaperland i ended up as a freelance photojournalist en photographer, combining photography and writing. and now i am retired and my profession has turned into a hobby again. still i have that journalistic approach in my photographic work. i do a lot of streetphotography nowadays. and i like doing reportage, landscapes and portraits.
