The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is the most advanced fighter aircraft of the United States Air Force. The fighter jet is produced in parts by the firms Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Boeing and Pratt & Whitney. It should enable the United States Air Force to maintain air superiority in the world until the middle of the 21st century.
The first flight of an F-22 Raptor was in September 1997. Development of the F-22 began in the 80s as the study Advanced Tactical Fighter ATF. This was an advanced combat aircraft during the Cold War which was designed to fight the air forces of the Soviet Union. The aircraft had to replace the F-15 Eagle from 1972 and the F-117 Nighthawk from 1981. The Raptor must be able to compete against nine aircraft of the Su-27 Flanker class. It is assumed, most data is still secret, that the F-22 at a speed of more than 1500 km / h on the radar remains invisible. The Raptor is also considered capable to attack enemy aircraft at very long range.
