The Amsterdam tram is a medium-sized tram company in the Netherlands and is operated by GVB (Gemeentevervoerbedrijf Amsterdam).
On June 3, 1875, the first horse tram line of the AOM, the Amsterdamsche Omnibus Maatschappij (founded in 1872 by, among others, Karel Herman Schadd), was inaugurated. This connected the Plantation with the Leidscheplein. In the last quarter of the 19th century, horse-drawn tram lines were constructed through the main streets of Amsterdam and all the neighbourhoods within the Singelgracht were connected to Dam Square. There were also lines to the then new housing estates, so at the end of the century there were about fifteen tram lines to the Vondelstraat, Overtoom, Willemsparkweg, Amsteldijk, Linnaeusstraat, Weesperzijde, Bilderdijkstraat and Ceintuurbaan, among others. In the current tramlines 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 (and 9 and 10 to 22 July 2018) the routes of the original horse-drawn tramlines are still clearly recognizable.
