About ‘Little church in the countryside’ by Tilo Grellmann

The little church in the countryside in Alt Placht is a charming half-timbered building that was built around 1700 by Huguenot religious refugees. It is located around 300 metres south-east of the village of Alt Placht, which belongs to the town of Templin in Brandenburg. The church is a listed building and is surrounded by centuries-old lime trees dating back to around 1500.

Originally built as a chapel for the Alt Placht estate, the little church was built on the foundations of a medieval church. The architectural style is reminiscent of northern French half-timbered architecture, which indicates the influence of the Huguenots. The church has a gabled roof, which was originally thatched.

In the 1970s, the little church had fallen into serious disrepair and was in danger of being forgotten. After reunification in 1989, a support association was founded to help restore the building. In 1994, the first church service was held in 30 years and the historic bell, which had previously been sold, was reacquired.

Today, the little church in the countryside is used for religious and cultural events and is open to visitors all year round. It is a popular venue for concerts and other events organised by the parish and the support association.
