This botanical artwork is based on a photograph of the leaves and fruits of a sweet gum tree (Latin name liquidambar styraciflua) in autumn. In other seasons, this tree looks fairly unremarkable but in the fall, there's no limit. The star-shaped leaves turn all shades of green, yellow, orange, red and almost purple. Together with the spiky fruit balls, the foliage of the amber tree is a feast for the eyes every year.
I copied a photo of those leaves and fruits, rotated it, and overlaid it transparently. The result is this kaleidoscopic image in which, despite the abstraction, elements from the original photograph can still be recognized.
Another adaptation of the same photo resulted in a sister image, titled Liquidambar Red, also for sale in my shop. Together, Red and Green form a diptych but can also be hung on the wall separately.
My work can be found in the border regions of photography, painting and computer visuals. With my company 3Develop I do work in commission but I use the same techniques, skills and software to make free work.
