The composition of the painting leads the viewer from darkness to light, like a visual journey from grief to hope. The background has a deep, dark colour of mourning that symbolises grief. Over it lie the shards of brokenness, like fragments of glass, expressing pain and loss. But these shards reflect the light breaking through the darkness, creating a beautiful play of colours.
Grief can expose the contrast of life. Life is made up of layers. On the one hand, there is the dark raw side; on the other, light invades in places where you don't expect it. When the light breaks, the colours dance across the shards, radiating not only brokenness but also beauty and transformation.
During a period of mourning, I discovered the refraction of light; I started to explore this in several paintings. I saw how the refraction kept bringing out colours. This gave sparkle to my life again, which I made visible through small silver shadings in the work.
This painting invites reflection and offers comfort, while capturing the complexity of emotions in a period of mourning. The shadows are deep, but the light is powerful, reinforcing the message that even in the most difficult times, there is always room for hope and renewal.
