The largest steel company in the country was the Walloon Cockerill-Sambre. Created by a merger between two factories, Cockerill-Sambre had four giant sites in Wallonia and employed more than 10,000 people. After several takeovers, Cockerill-Sambre (then renamed Arcelor) became the largest metal group in the world, generating turnover of tens of billions of euros. Working for Arcelor meant job security, and often entire families were at work in the factories.
