When a colleague described the island of Majorca to Gestel as a paradise on earth, his decision was quickly made. Together with two other artists and his wife, he left for the south in early January 1914. In Majorca, they lived in a house on a hill above the Bay of Palma, near El Terreno. From the front of the house they had a view of the bay below and from the back they could see the hills, above which lay the remains of a castle. Here Gestel immediately developed a new way of painting the beauty of the landscape. The landscape was always his motif; figures almost never appeared. The most striking thing about his new style was that he resolved each motif into planes of all possible colours, which he spread across the canvas in one flowing rhythm. One of the charms of Gestel's Majorcan paintings is the interplay of reality and abstraction. The colours are purely imaginary and define the forms. Where two surfaces meet, there is no line but a cord of colour. This gives the whole a character of space and light.
Leendert Gestel (Woerden, the Netherlands 22 November 1881 - Hilversum, 26 November 1941) was a Dutch painter and bookplate designer. Leo Gestel developed a luminist style.
