Galloway,
Tongue out of the Mouth, Grass in the Mouth
The Galloway is a polled cattle breed originating from the Galloway region in the south-west of Scotland. Since the 1990s, Galloways can be found in several Dutch nature reserves. Generally, the Galloway is black in colour, but blond animals also occur. The thick curly coat is ideal for keeping the animals warm and dry. Scotland's Galloways are kept extensively in less productive landscapes for meat production. Partly because of this, the Galloway is still extremely self-reliant and, for example, capable of calving independently. It was these characteristics, together with their easy-going character, that made the animal come to the Netherlands in the 1990s for grazing nature reserves.
