Landscape at Le Cannet is the most ambitious depiction of the world that was central to Bonnard's art in the last decades of his life. The artist sat on the hill above his house, which he had named "Le Bosquet" because of the forest that surrounded it, and looked west toward the Esterel Mountains. The painter places himself in the foreground on the right, next to a couple of goats; on the other side of the canvas, a cow stands among prickly plants. Flooded with warm light and with a rainbow-like array of colors, the painting was intended to decorate the home of a prominent collector on the outskirts of Paris.
