Landing Piper L-4J Grasshopper (N1227N / 45-5060).
The Piper J-3 Cub is a light American single-engine two-seater aircraft, of which a total of 20,038 were produced by Piper Aircraft between 1937 and 1947. Originally intended for training pilots, the high-decker aircraft also became popular among private pilots. It is the most famous lightweight aircraft of all time and owes its success to its simple construction and relatively low price.
In World War II, it became clear that the Cub was also ideally suited for military purposes. They were widely used for reconnaissance, transport and sometimes even equipped with bazooka's under the wings for ground attacks. The military variants of the Cub were the L-4, O-59 and NE-1. The nickname for the military Cub became 'grasshopper' (grasshopper). Military versions were distinguished from civilian ones by the larger cockpit windows that extended to behind the wing. The skylight was also enlarged.
This was taken on 8 July 2023 at Hoogeveen airfield.
