The Boeing 747-400 is the improved version of the Boeing 747-300 aircraft type. The first test flight took place on 29 April 1988, the first commercial flight was on 9 February 1989, operated by Northwest Airlines. It is the best-selling version of the Boeing 747. A total of 693 of them were built; only 81 of the 747-300 were sold.
KLM used the 747-400 (fully equipped to carry passengers) and 747-400M (part passenger, part cargo).
In early 2018, this aircraft was withdrawn from service and flown to the former Twente airbase where it was decommissioned by the company AELS.
