Agriculture or agrarianism is the set of economic activities in which land is used for the production of plants and animals, for the purpose of human food supply. There are different definitions, with horticulture and livestock generally included in agriculture, but forestry and fish farming not.
Depending on the crop grown or the animals kept, the type of soil available and the level of prosperity, different farming methods are used. In poorer areas simple implements and draught animals are still used, while elsewhere agricultural work is extensively mechanized and automated, with large, technically advanced machines. Historically, today's modern permanent agriculture, which can feed larger populations, is contrasted with vagrant agriculture, which was subsistence, and not very labor-intensive.
