Holes are dug in funnel-shaped depressions to put the vine in fertile soil. Lapilli layers coming on top. The volcanic ash stores water from the air at night and absorbs the morning dew to release it to the plants throughout the day. Walls of lava stones protect against the wind. This has created a unique cultural landscape.
