Independence Square (Dataran Merdeka) in Malaysia is located opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. It is a landmark and the place where the National Day is celebrated every year. The square covers an area of about 8 hectares with green grass.
On August 31, 1957, the Malaysian flag was hoisted here for the first time, marking the country's independence from British rule. The flagpole at the southern end of the square is now the tallest flagpole in the world, reaching a height of 100 meters.
Around the square are many buildings of historical value. The square is the most famous historical landmark of the city and houses buildings such as the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, museums and a cathedral.
