Kuala Lumpur, the capital of the Southeast Asian country Malaysia, is located in the southwest of the Malay Peninsula. The million-strong city of Kuala Lumpur covers an area of 243 square kilometres in the Klang Valley, which stretches between the Strait of Malacca, which separates Malaysia from Indonesia's Sumatra, and the Titiwangsa Mountains. The Klang River, which joins the Gombak River in the urban area of Kuala Lumpur, connects Kuala Lumpur, which lies about 30 kilometres inland, with the sea. The city is the centre of Malaysia's most important metropolitan region (8.5 million inhabitants). Visitors to KL, as Kuala Lumpur is commonly called, can expect one of the most interesting big cities in Southeast Asia. The numerous neighbourhoods of Kuala Lumpur, characterised by different cultures and religions, by the juxtaposition of the modernity of a boomtown and living tradition, breathtaking architecture and islands of green inviting to rest, differ considerably from each other.
