A blue flash and a whistling call: this is how a kingfisher often announces itself. Kingfishers are mainly birds of streams and rivers with fresh, flowing water, but also breed at still water (especially in the Netherlands).
's winter can also be seen at more open and brackish or saline waters, looking for enough food - small fish, aquatic insects and the like - and ice-free, clear water to get that food. Severe winters kill many kingfishers.
