A blue-orange flash and a whistling call: this is how a kingfisher often announces itself. Kingfishers are mainly birds of streams and rivers with fresh, flowing water, but also breed on standing water (especially in the Netherlands). They dig their nesting tunnel on sandy or loamy steep bank edges. 'In winter, they can also be seen at more open and brackish or saline waters, looking for sufficient food - small fish, aquatic insects and the like - and ice-free, clear water to obtain that food.
Unmistakably blue and orange coloured. Bit plumply built with short tail and a large head and beak. White throat and side neck. Wings and crown greenish blue with bright blue back and rump. Often sits upright on a low-hanging branch above the water, lurking for fish. Flies over the water calling loudly and can then be easily seen. Females have an orange-red bill base, in males it is black.
