A blue flash and a loud whistling call are often the first things to be seen and heard from a kingfisher. Kingfishers are characteristic birds of streams and rivers with fresh, flowing water. To a lesser extent, they also nest near still, fish-rich waters. The presence of sandy or loamy steep bank edges is a requirement, as this is where the nesting tunnel is excavated. In winter, kingfishers are also seen at more open and brackish or saline waters. All that matters then is the presence of sufficient food - small fish, water insects and the like - and an ice-free, clear water surface to get that food. In addition, Kingfishers appreciate a few trees or bushes along the shore, which are used as a base.
