The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a bird in the kingfisher+ (Alcedinidae) family. It is a striking appearance due to its contrasting blue upperparts and orange parts, but also a very shy species that is rarely seen. This species is the only kingfisher species found as far north as Europe, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Most kingfishers+ live in the tropics. The kingfisher+ is a typical fish-eater and is therefore strongly water-bound. Because of its preference for steep walls to breed in, they are often found near running water, as steep banks naturally form there due to erosion. Stagnant fish-rich waters with vegetation also provide excellent habitat. In most of its range, the species is common, but in some areas the kingfisher is threatened with extinction.
