About ‘Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Scotland’ by Gert Hilbink

Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Scotland is (the ruins) of a 15th-century castle on the north-eastern shore of Loch Awe in the Scottish region of Argyll and Bute. The castle was built in the mid-15th century by Colin Campbell, first Lord of Glenorchy. The marks of the master masons largely correspond to those of Rosslyn Chapel. This illustrates that master masons often travelled around within the country and were hired for different projects. Throughout history, alterations were made to the castle. In 1690 the last major change was the construction of barracks to accommodate 200 soldiers on the north side of the complex.
During the period of the Jacobite uprisings, the castle was used to accommodate a garrison of government soldiers.
Around 1740 the castle lost its importance as the owner moved to Taymouth Castle. At that time, the castle was still in the possession of the Campbell clan. In 1760, a fire broke out in the castle, presumably due to a lightning strike. The castle was then permanently abandoned. In 1951, it became the property of the state.
