The SS Rotterdam is one of the best known ships of Dutch maritime history. From 1959 this ship, owned by the Holland America Line, sailed the world's oceans, during the first decade on the North Atlantic route and afterwards until 1997 as a cruise ship.
The renovation, in subsequent years, did not go entirely smoothly. But since 2008, the Rotterdam is moored at the Third Katendrechtsehoofd in Maashaven. The ship is one of the main attractions of the city after which it is named.
In this image, seen from Wilhelmina Pier, the new neighbourhoods of Katendrecht are visible in the foreground. Behind the SS Rotterdam we see the district of Charlois as well as the harbour activity around Waalhaven. In the upper left is the 207 meter high KPN radio tower.
