The Altes Museum (called Königliches Museum until 1845) is an archaeological museum in Berlin, located on Museumsinsel. The building, which is considered a highlight of neoclassicism, was built between 1823 and 1828 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It opened its doors in 1830.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel (Neuruppin, 13 March 1781 - Berlin, 9 October 1841) was one of the most important German architects. He was also a painter and draughtsman, urban planner, set designer and furniture designer. He knew the history of architecture - around that time an emerging scientific discipline - and designed in both classical and Gothic style without imitating existing buildings. In 1813, King Frederick William III conceived the award the Iron Cross, and Schinkel designed the decoration to go with it.
