The Kalisbrug (or Fish Bridge) is a national monumental arched bridge over the Oudegracht canal near the Vismarkt. It is about 25 metres wide and designed in brick and natural stone with iron railings.
Around 1200, trade in the immediate vicinity of the Vismarkt consisted of (among other things) fish and salt. Between 1250 and 1325, two new bridges were built halfway to the Vismarkt: the Kalisbrug and the Corduanierbrug. Around 1550, halfway the Vismarkt, the bridges merged into one bridge. This widening/overpass created two squares and more space for trade. Markets were subsequently held on the Kalisbrug well into the 20th century. In the 20th century, these were busy markets in fish and also stamps.
