Karamea is an off the beaten path destination in the northwest of New Zealand's southern island. The area is a natural wonderland situated on the edge of the Kahurangi National Park, the Tasman Sea and the Oparara basin. The road to this area starts in Westport and runs about 150 km along the sea and through the mountains to finally after about 2 to 3 hours drive to arrive in the small town of Karamea. From here you can visit the special limestone caves, cliffs and rock arches of the Oparara basin. If you drive a little further from here, the road ends at the edge of the Kahurangi N.P.. A beautiful nature reserve on the edge of the sea. From here you can make beautiful walks, varying from 30 minutes to several days. On this picture you see the place where the Kohai river flows into the sea and the Kahurangi N.P. begins. You can also put up your camper or tent here and enjoy a few days of peace and quiet in this remote corner of New Zealand where tourism hasn't really penetrated yet.
