Jules Pascin's artwork "Southern scene" painted in 1916, shows a lively street scene with various figures. On the left of the work are two men, one wearing a hat. In the centre stands a woman in a white dress, who attracts attention by her position and dress. To her right, a man can be seen carrying a child on his arm and holding another child by the hand. The background includes a yellow building and some trees, adding to the sunny and lively atmosphere of the scene.
Pascin uses loose, sketchy lines and light, watercolour colours that evoke a summery, relaxed atmosphere. The composition exudes a sense of warmth and vibrancy, befitting a southern setting.
Julius Mordecai Pinkas (Vidin, Bulgaria, 31 March 1885 - Paris, France, 20 June 1930) was a Bulgarian-American painter and draughtsman of mixed descent: his father was a Sephardic Jew, his mother was of Serbian-Italian origin. Pascin's work, which is sometimes counted as expressionism, includes portraits and mostly erotic-tinged and satirical images, characterised by intermingling delicate colour shades.
