The artwork "Figures on the Beach, Coney Island" by Jules Pascin, painted in 1917, depicts a lively and dynamic scene on Coney Island beach. The composition is filled with various figures in swimsuits, sitting, standing and lying on the beach at different points. The figures are sketchily and expressively rendered, with loose lines and watercolours emphasising the summer atmosphere. The central figure is a man in a suit, which contrasts with the casual beachwear of the others. This artwork is interesting because of the way Pascin captures the bustle and diversity of beach life, as well as the unique combination of sketchy lines and watercolour technique.
Julius Mordecai Pinkas (Vidin, Bulgaria, 31 March 1885 - Paris, France, 20 June 1930) was a Bulgarian-American painter and draughtsman of mixed descent: his father was a Sephardic Jew, his mother was of Serbian-Italian origin. Pascin's work, which is sometimes counted as expressionism, includes portraits and mostly erotic-tinged and satirical pictures, characterised by intermingling delicate colour shades.
