The monumental painting with a view through Reichenbachtal of the majestic mountain massif, consisting of the peaks Rosenhorn, Wellhörner and Wetterhorn, is generally considered the masterpiece in the oeuvre of Schirmer, who was appointed the first professor of landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts a year later. The composition of the picture with its realistic details suggests an exact reproduction of nature.
The Wetterhorn is a 3692-meter-high mountain in Switzerland, located close to Grindelwald. The massif has three different peaks, which are close to each other.
The mountain here, partly under snow, is in the sun with the crescent of the moon in the background.
Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (September 7, 1807 in Jülich; September 11, 1863 in Karlsruhe) was a German landscape painter and graphic artist of the Düsseldorf School.
