A poem tells of the adventures of Huon of Bordeaux who, in order to atone for killing one of Charlemagne's sons in a joust, must go to Baghdad, kill the knight to the left of the caliph, the caliph of four of his molars and rob a handful of his whiskers, and claim his daughter, Rezia, as his bride. Huon can accomplish all this with the help of Oberon, the king of the elves, only to bring misfortune to himself and Rezia when he breaks his vow of chastity.
In the episode depicted in the current painting, Huon, looking for shelter from a storm, meets a wild man dressed in tatters and cat skins in a cave. This turns out to be Scherasmin, servant of Huon's father who died in the Holy Land. Gifted by the opportunity to serve the son of his old master, Scherasmin promises his immortal loyalty to Huon during his journey.
