Jökulsárlón is the most famous and largest glacial lake in Iceland. It is located south of the Vatnajökull glacier between the national park Skaftafell and the town of Höfn. The glacial lake is relatively new, as it was only created in the years 1934-1935. However, the lake grew rapidly from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 23 km² today due to glacier melting. With a depth of about 250 metres, Jökulsárlón is currently the deepest lake in the country.
