Tips for use

The Cardo Maximus in Jerash, Jordan, is a paved avenue that crosses the ancient Roman city from north to south. This thoroughfare was the nerve centre of the city, where the inhabitants would gather to trade, exchange news or simply take a stroll. The time-worn cobblestones bear witness to the daily activity of a prosperous city in the Roman Empire.
The Cardo Maximus is lined with imposing Corinthian columns, which formed a majestic backdrop to this main thoroughfare. As you stroll along, you'll see niches, triumphal arches and the remains of the shops that once enlivened this street. The impressive symmetry of the site is a perfect illustration of Roman engineering and town planning.
For lovers of history and archaeology, the Cardo Maximus offers an immersion in antiquity, as well as being a place where the imagination can run riot: it's easy to imagine the daily hustle and bustle of this flourishing city. Located in the heart of Jerash, the site is a must for anyone wishing to explore Jordan's rich heritage.
