Oberwesel is a town on the Middle Rhine. It is located in Rhineland-Palatinate in the district of Rhein-Hunsrück. The town belongs to the municipality of Hunsrück-Mittelrhein and is one of two administrative centres.
In the High and Late Middle Ages Oberwesel was an independent imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire, which is reflected in the city's coat of arms.

Van Call was a self-taught artist who became known for the many landscapes, townscapes and buildings he drew and engraved. He made a long journey via Germany and Switzerland, along the Rhine, to Rome, producing many works along the way.
