The painting comes from the back room of the Nieuwegracht 6 building in Utrecht where it served as wallpaper. The fragment was cut out of a wall covering in 1934.
Adonis and Aphrodite or Venus were lovers according to Greek and Phoenician mythology. The name of this deity, Adonis, comes simply from the Phoenician Adon, which means 'lord'. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, originally an Ancient Italian goddess of vegetation, protector of gardens and vineyards, was later identified with the Greek Aphrodite. Her Etruscan equivalent is Turan.

He mainly painted genre pieces and portraits. Other names for him are Jan Harmensz. van Bijlert, Jan van Biler, Jan van Bylaert, Giovanni Bilardo and Jan van Bylert.
