Vanitas is a theme in art. The word vanitas is Latin and means vanity, complacency and emptiness. This is therefore an allegory of transience.
But vanitas isn't all that: nowadays the meaning would come closest to "fried air"; that's really "nothing" without referring to "nothingness".
The vanitas painting has a Protestant Christian origin. It encourages the viewer to focus on eternal life.
